A PAIR of couples who have been drinking at the Howley Hotel pub for 50 years have reopened the beloved town centre pub.
The Howley Hotel was closed under the old ownership last month, and has reopened with cheaper drinks, karaoke, quizzes, and a claim that they will put the pub ‘where it belongs, back at the heart of the community.’
Chris Sherman, the new landlord, said: “We are a group of locals who found out the pub was going to close so decided to save the pub. We are two locals who have been drinking here for the past 50 years.
“We want to put the Howley back at the heart of the community, putting live music on, and bring the community together.”
The pub is being brought back by Chris Sherman, Mark Sherman, Anne Hilton, and Alan Hilton.
The pub was the source of controversy after online rumours the pub’s beer garden would be replaced by a Spar or Nisa.
Discussions were sparked after The Howley Facebook page posted a picture of the beer garden with the caption ‘just done the Howley's beer garden for the last time as when the new owner of the site takes over, we lose it, so come and make the most of it while you can. Kid and dog friendly’.
The owners, however, confirmed that the beer garden will remain open for now until a decision is made on the site.
