A GROUP of Grimsby Town supporters travelling on a train back from a match with Tranmere Rovers have been accused of chanting about the Hillsborough disaster.

Images and videos posted on X (formerly known as Twitter) on Saturday evening appear to show group of fans on a TransPennine Express train between Warrington and Manchester with a Grimsby Town flag at around 9pm on Saturday, October 7.

Grismby Town had drawn 2-2 against Tranmere Rovers at Prenton Park that afternoon.

In a video the group can be heard chanting the name of prominent right wing figure and anti-Islam campaigner, Tommy Robinson, with one X user also posting that the group were singing about the Hillsborough disaster which caused the unlawful deaths of 97 Liverpool supporters in 1989.

Chris Jackson, managing director at TransPennine Express, said: “We were made aware of anti-social behaviour on-board one of trains between Warrington and Manchester last weekend.

“The incident has been referred to British Transport Police and we will continue to work with officers to assist any subsequent investigation.”

Mr Jackson added: “We take a firm stance against anti-social behaviour on our trains and at our stations and will do all we can to take action against anyone responsible for such behaviour.

“Thankfully, the railway is a relatively low crime environment, but when incidents do happen our customers can seek help from a member of staff or contact British Transport Police either by calling 0800 40 50 40 or by texting 61016. In an emergency people should always call 999.”

Grimsby Town have been approached for comment.
