THE drama surrounding Murcar the magpie continues in Great Sankey.

Cheshire Police are warning residents that any violent behaviour towards the bird will ‘not be tolerated’.

This comes after a comical post that was made on the Great Sankey Police Facebook page, humouring the rumours of the ‘killer magpie’, and jesting with residents to ‘stay vigilant’.

The bird has become a hot topic in the community since its bold presence was first noticed a few weeks ago at The Eagle Spots & Social Club on Thornton Road.

Some residents have reported Murcar ‘pecking at their feet’, while footage has been caught of it chasing dogs on the local field.

Rumours even circulated that the bird was raised by a family in Sankey.

A spokesperson for Cheshire Police said: “It has been raised to my attention that there are a few members of the community who want to cause harm to Murcar which is not to be tolerated.

“The RSPCA will be contacted and will be informed of their whereabouts.”

Meanwhile a Sankey resident, who will remain anonymous, has come forward to say that her and her family raised the magpie after finding him injured as a baby.

The resident said: “He was found in a bush at the back of The Eagle, unable to move and he was very scared.

“He is the sweetest magpie ever and loves dogs and humans because it was raised with a dog and this may sound funny but my dog and Murcur are best friends.

“This magpie who is supposed to be ‘killer’ and a ‘terrorist’ is nothing but a baby with no family and is hungry.”
