RESIDENTS may experience some disruption to council services such as bin collections due to strike action from next week.

Warrington Borough Council has confirmed that a small number of waste, highways and environment workers have announced their intention to strike from Tuesday, October 3, until Monday, October 16.

This strike action will affect Unite the Union members at the council and is related to the 2023/2024 local government pay award.

The dispute is related to negotiations which are held nationally and is not about local conditions of service in Warrington, a council spokesman commented.

They said: “We anticipate a small level of disruption due to this strike action, with the majority of expected disruption, albeit minor, affecting our waste services, though most day-to-day services are expected to continue as normal.

“We respect the national collective pay bargaining process, but we are also working to ensure the continuity of services to our residents throughout the industrial action period.

“We may not be able to provide entirely the same levels of service during this time, but please continue to put your bins out as normal for collection days.

“During this expected minor disruption, we will prioritise the collection of household waste (black bins) and recycled waste (blue bins).”

Unite general secretary Sharon Graham said: “Council workers are on the frontline providing vital services to the communities they serve.

“It is simply unacceptable that workers have been forced onto the breadline due to years of real terms pay cuts.

“Unite never takes a backward step in supporting its members and is dedicated to enhancing their jobs, pay and conditions.

“Unite will be providing its local authority members with its complete support.”
