IN the newly released ‘Good Beer Guide 2024’, Warrington has more than doubled the number of entries of last year.

Whilst last year Warrington had only three entries, found predominantly in the centre of town, this year has seen triple the number of entries, from across the town.

Returning from last year, ‘Hop Emporium’, ‘Tavern’, and ‘The Albion’, have all made an appearance on the list again this year.

Following new ownership in 2022, town favourite ‘Lower Angel’ has made a return after missing out last year in a surprise to patrons across Warrington.

Also added in town was ‘Costello’s Bar’, the eco-friendly Time Square bar which opened last year.

Outside of the town centre, however, entries have been added from Culcheth, Lymm, Penketh, and Thelwall.

Two entries featured in Warrington’s Back Our Pubs campaign, ‘Little Manor’ in Thelwall, and the ‘Ferry Tavern’ in Penketh.

These beautiful and picturesque pubs also received praise from CAMRA, the organisation behind the Good Beer Guide, for their selection of drinks, with Ferry Tavern receiving praise for its beer garden and Little Manor receiving plaudits for their food and selection of ‘real ale’.

‘Liberty Gin Bar’ in Culcheth, and ‘Brewery Tap’ in Lymm also made the list.

The Good Beer Guide is organised by CAMRA every year, the Campaign for Real Ale, in which they release their list of the best pubs and breweries across the country.

The Guide, which surveys 4,500 of the best pubs across the UK, is the definitive beer drinker’s guide for those seeking the best pints in the nation’s pubs.

Whilst Warrington has fared well in the list, the nationwide statistics saw cause for concerns following the ongoing pressure the cost-of-living crisis has put on pubs.

This year’s Guide tells the story of an industry under threat, as although the Guide records 82 new breweries, 142 have closed.

This net loss of 60 breweries is described by CAMRA as ‘a worrying reminder that a lack of support from the Government means dire consequences for local businesses, in the wake of a cost-of-business crisis and the constant pressure of energy bills’.

The Good Beer Guide 2024 is available for purchase here: https://shop1.camra.org.uk/product/the-good-beer-guide-2024/ with a foreword by Iron Maiden’s Bruce Dickinson.

CAMRA Chairman Nik Antona said: “We’re honoured to have Bruce Dickinson pen the foreword for The Good Beer Guide 2024. As we enter our second half century of producing the Guide, there is no one better to introduce this year’s edition, and highlight what makes these institutions so worth visiting.

“The last few years have been an incredibly difficult time for the industry, and we need more support than ever before to keep our nation’s pubs and breweries open and thriving. I’d encourage everyone to use this year’s Guide to visit the very best pubs and breweries across the UK and support them for generations to come.”
