A DRIVER who caused a pile-up and left people unconscious in a crash while drugged-up has been hauled back before the courts.

Daniel Boyd was jailed for three years back in 2018 for the horror incident and disqualified from driving for four and a half years.

He was ordered to pass an extended retest before getting back behind the wheel, but the 28-year-old has now been caught driving while disqualified.

Appearing at Warrington Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday on charges of driving while disqualified and driving without third-party insurance, he was handed a community penalty.

The facts of the case were outlined by prosecutor Yvonne Dobson who told the court how on May 12, police were on patrol in Warrington.

They saw a silver Ford S-Max being driven along Winwick Road, with checks flagging the driver of the vehicle as unlicenced and potentially under the influence of drugs.

Officers requested that the vehicle stop, which it did on the forecourt of the Shell garage opposite Decathlon.

Police spoke to the driver, with the defendant identifying himself, with checks revealing that he had been disqualified from driving in 2018 and was ordered to pass an extended retest before getting behind the wheel again.

This disqualification was imposed at Liverpool Crown Court after he caused a pile-up that left two people with broken ribs after he slammed his car into a queue of traffic while drugged-up.

CCTV captured the incident on Formby Bypass as Boyd, then aged 23, slammed his Vauxhall Corsa into a Suzuki Alto as it waited at a set of traffic lights.

All three people in that car needed hospital treatment, with the two passengers – both in their 60s – suffering fractured ribs and needing major trauma unit attention, while the driver suffered two black eyes and burns from her airbag.

The Alto was shunted into a Nissan Qashqai and a Renault Kangoo van, leaving the Qashqai driver with a chest injury.

Boyd was taken to Southport Hospital and arrested, with blood samples showed cocaine in his system.

Daniel Boyd was sentenced at Warrington Magistrates' Court

He admitted two counts of causing serious injury by dangerous driving and was locked up for three years, as well as being disqualified from driving for four and a half years.

Officers who stopped him on Winwick Road in May carried out drug and alcohol tests which both came back negative.

The court was told that Boyd has three previous convictions for nine offences including the causing serious injury by dangerous driving matters.

Appearing in court without legal representation, said nothing on his behalf in terms of mitigation.

Boyd, of Whitfield Lane in Heswall, Wirral, was sentenced by district judge John McGarva to a 12-month community order.

He must also undertake 20 rehabilitation activity requirement days, complete 80 hours of unpaid work and pay costs of £234.

In addition, he has been disqualified from driving for the next six months and must still pass an extended retest before driving again after this period expires.

Speaking after the dangerous driving sentencing in 2018, Rob Jones, of the Crown Prosecution Service, said: “The driver of the first car that Boyd smashed into described seeing him approach her car at speed.

“She saw him in her rear-view mirror, slouched in the driver's seat with his eyes closed. He made no attempt to slow down or open his eyes.

“He shunted into the back of her and her vehicle then crashed into the car in front. When she came to a stop, she looked at her two passengers and they were both unconscious. She thought they were dead.

“Thankfully, they were alive but seriously injured. The woman’s car was destroyed and the other cars badly damaged.

“She said it was the worst driving she'd seen in 43 years of driving. One of the first witnesses at the scene described it as ‘carnage’.

“The sentence should send out a warning to anyone who is reckless enough to get behind a wheel when under the influence of drugs or drink and a message - don’t.”
