IT has been more than two years since Storm Christoph hit Warrington, bringing utter devastation to the town.

It resulted in some of the worst flooding the town has ever seen.

Residents were forced to flee their homes, leaving behind everything they owned.

And although two-and-a-half years have passed, it doesn’t get any easier for some residents who were hit by the floods.

Jean and Bernard Daniels are residents on Longshaw Street. During Storm Christoph in January 2021, their home was hit by flooding with water up to their windows.

The property, which they had recently moved into and decorated, was ruined and the pair were forced to ‘sofa surf’ for a while. They then had to live in a hotel before they were able to move back into their Dallam home.

Following last weekend’s heavy rain which saw high water levels in some areas of the town, including flooding at Sankey Valley Park, Mark Roberts, who Jean is a mother figure to, told the Warrington Guardian how she is ‘constantly living in fear’ every time it rains.

Even after last weekend, there were deep puddles of water that had gathered outside of Jean’s house.

He said: “The fact is, every time it rains, my mum is sat there worrying about her home.

“She is constantly living in fear that their house is going to flood.

“It is inhumane for someone to constantly sit there and think ‘is that water going to come in?’

“They are constantly sat there watching it, they can’t leave their home as their worry is that if they leave and it rains, they will come back to a flooded house.

“It has got to be such a horrible feeling to keep on thinking that.”

Mark, a Latchford resident, says it is not even about the money caused by the damage but the ‘mental torture’ and inconvenience of it.

The family believes that Warrington Borough Council needs to do more to investigate the problem. Mark says at least three to four times a year the front of Jean’s property floods and the cause of this has never been established.

Talking about the council, Mark continued: “We simply want them to investigate it properly and actually give an explanation as to why it is happening.

“They aren’t dealing with the issue which is that the system cannot cope with the amount of water that is going through it.

“They need to give a proper understanding to residents, simply saying we will have funding in a few years isn’t acceptable.”
