A DRIVER hit the shocking speed of 85mph on a 30mph road in Warrington.

It comes after police installed a speeding indicator device (SID) on Hatton Lane following concerns from local residents.

The mobile signs are designed to alert drivers of their speed and are temporarily installed if police have identified an issue at a particular spot.

Officers from Hatton, Stretton, and Walton Police installed the device last month and have since shared the shocking results.

They said that during its deployment, 5,324 vehicles were recorded passing the device on Hatton Lane – which has a speed limit of 30mph and is lined by houses, a nursery, and a doctor's surgery.

Of these, the highest speed recorded was a shocking 85mph. The average was 37mph.

Responding to this, one resident told the Warrington Guardian: “It is disgusting, they could kill someone.

“It is getting worse, I see loads of speeding on that lane.”

Hatton Lane wasn’t the only road the SID was temporarily deployed on.

It was also installed on Warrington Road which leads off Hatton Lane and also has a 30mph speed limit.

Here, 4,176 vehicles were recorded passing the device.

And again, the data shows more shocking results with the highest speed recorded as 75mph.

The average vehicle speed here was 26mph though.

Both SIDs have been fully charged and have now been deployed back in the area.

A number of residents responded to the news that was shared by Hatton, Stretton, and Walton Police in a Facebook post.

One person said: “Thanks for your help in Hatton.

“The figures seem to warrant your increased presence.

“Amount of traffic on Warrington Road has a high traffic load for a windy narrow country lane where at points it is barely two cars width.

“With horses and bikes as well it is an accident waiting to happen, unfortunately.”
