AN inquest into the death of a man who died at Warrington Bank Quay station has been formally opened.

Severe disruption was experienced for rail users passing through Warrington following the incident at the railway station on Tuesday, June 6.

A large emergency service presence attended the Parker Street transport hub that morning, but tragically, the death of a man was confirmed by British Transport Police.

An initial inquest hearing took place on Wednesday at Warrington Coroner’s Court on Wednesday, sitting at St James’ Business Centre off Wilderspool Causeway.

This heard how the emergency incident related to the death of Paul Robinson, a resident of Sankey Bridges.

The brief hearing informed the court how the 48-year-old was stood on one of the platforms at the station shortly before 10.30am and jumped in front of a passing train.

He was identified by police through his fingerprints. No post mortem examination was carried out.

In postponing the hearing, Victoria Davies, area coroner for Cheshire, said: “Given the unnatural element in the death, I formally open the inquest into the death of Paul Robinson and adjourn the hearing.”

An inquest was scheduled for January 18 next year.

Northern, Transport for Wales and Avanti West Coast services were cancelled and delayed between Frodsham and Earlestown for several hours as a result of the emergency incident.

A spokesman for British Transport Police at the time said: “Officers were called to Warrington Bank Quay station at 10.29am following reports of a casualty on the tracks.

“Paramedics also attended, however sadly a man in his 40s was pronounced dead at the scene.

“The incident is not being treated as suspicious and a file will be prepared for the coroner.”

A Northern travel notice states: “Due to the emergency services dealing with an incident between Chester and Manchester Victoria, all lines are blocked.

“Train services running through these stations will be cancelled or delayed by up to 60 minutes.”
