SANKEY Valley pupils built their very own versatile racing kart to compete in an exciting racing event this month.
Using impressive initiative, a team of children from Sankey Valley St James Primary School designed the bodywork and built the Goblin car, ready to compete in the Greenpower IET Goblin kit car race last Wednesday, June 14.
The race took place in Lichfield, with all the year six class setting off from the school at 7.15am.
With the sun beating down, the pupils who attended competed in three separate races for the charity event: a drag race, a slalom race and a sprint race.
Greenpower Education Trust hosted the event, with the charities key goal to encourage young people to be interested in science and engineering.
They do this by challenging individuals to design, build and then race electric cars.
Year six pupils summarised the ‘fantastic’ day. They said: “It was great to work as a team.
“We were all so excited to see our friends race and we couldn’t believe when we won some races.”
Various fundraising was done in order for the Sankey Valley pupils to be able to compete in the racing event, with the Friends of Sankey Valley Fundraising and Support Group having donated half the funds to build and make the car.
Sponsorship was also needed to support the children to compete in the event including funding for overalls, helmets, gloves and the cost of transport.
Vital Energi, Crest Medical and Camelott Digital Solutions donated money to support the students and Gullivers World donated family tickets for the school to raffle to raise further funds for the trip.
A spokesperson for the school said: “All the children worked as a team, some children were pushers, others oversaw health and safety and the rest of the class supported the drivers and cheered them on.
“The children had a fantastic day and thoroughly enjoyed participating in all of the events.”
Mrs Feltham, headteacher at the setting added: “I am so proud of all the children, their attitude and achievement in not only building the car but taking part in the event. It was an amazing day.”
