FIREFIGHTERS were called to a Warrington prison following reports of a fire this afternoon, Tuesday.

It comes following reports of a minor incident at HM Prison Risley.

The fire service confirmed that it attended the category C prison on Warrington Road shortly after midday.

The Ministry of Justice, which oversees the prison system, confirmed that there was a small fire in the prison setting.

But it added that the incident was minor in nature, and that it has now been resolved.

A Prison Service spokesman said: “Hardworking staff safely resolved an incident at HMP Risley on Tuesday, June 6.

"Prisoners who break the rules face tough punishment, including extra time behind bars.”

They added that no staff members were injured during this incident.

A spokesman for Cheshire Police said: “Police were called following a report of concern for the welfare of a person at HMP Risley at 12.05pm today, Tuesday, June 6.

“It was later confirmed that lockers were on fire.

“Officers did not attend, with Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service attending to deal with the incident along with prison staff.”

Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service confirmed that crews were called to the prison following reports of a fire on a landing and extinguished the flames.
