WARRINGTON North MP Charlotte Nichols has issued a statement following a controversial tweet she posted over the weekend.

Ms Nichols took to social media after attending Neighbourhood Weekender music festival, staged in Victoria Park in Latchford over Saturday and Sunday.

While present, the MP witnessed chants of ‘f**k the Tories’ during the set of Jamie Webster, prompting her to post on Twitter that people joining in is something she ‘absolutely loves to see’.

She said: “Big chants of ‘f**k the Tories’ for @JamieWebster94 at @nbhdweekender and, I can't lie, I absolutely LOVE to see it! Love you Warrington.”

The tweet was condemned by many on the social media platform, with one comment reading: “Whatever you might think privately about the Tories, or anyone else for that matter, sometimes in the interest of respect, it’s better left unsaid.”

Conservative MP Graham Stuart also commented: “Peddling hate. Not a good look – and a terrible example to others. Be great if you reconsidered and deleted this.”

On the tweet, Ms Nichols this morning, Tuesday, said: “I have been at sporting events where the same chanting has taken place and Conservative MPs present have joined in with it, joking that you can interpret the statement one of two ways.

“Clearly they have a better sense of humour than some of those pearl clutching over the weekend, and yet somehow it is the political left who get characterised as ‘snowflakes’.

“People are understandably fed up after 13 years of this Government, and the litany of ways it has failed our country and our community.

“This is from foodbank demand soaring to sewage in our rivers, and from no new Warrington Hospital while NHS waiting times rocket to partying in Number 10 while people could not say goodbye to their dying loved ones.

“They have every right to express that, as they did, and the only thing I encourage is people turning their anger in the right direction at those responsible for the mess we are in, and not all those the Tories try to blame and scapegoat for their own failures.

“The sooner we have a General Election, people will not need to express that frustration in song form as they can do so at the ballot box instead.”

Ms Nichols also appeared on news channel Talk TV over the weekend to debate the tweet with presenter Mike Graham.

Labour’s regional press office for the north west was approached for a comment.
