APPLETON pupils raced their way to success after competing in the Warrington Schools Cross Country event.

The competition took place at Walton Hall and Gardens, with St Monica’s Catholic Primary School taking homme first place in several of the races.

As one of the smaller schools competing, they proved their abilities coming first in the Year four and five girls race and placed second in both the year four and five boys’ race and the year six girls’ race.

The year four and five girls were the dominant team throughout the series winning all three team races.

In the final event, the girls were led by Eve Brazier Kobus who achieved a superb second place and she was ably backed by Verity Harmon and Liesel Barnes.

All five girls who ran played their part and gleefully accepted the trophy together at the presentation.

Meanwhile the year four and five boys were extremely unlucky not to repeat the girls achievements, being nudged into second by Cherry Tree Primary School in Lymm.

Pupils, Billy Donlan and Christopher Bargery finished impressively inside the top 10. They were joined by Max Power who came sixth in the race - a fine achievement for his first race of the season.

The year six girls also came second across the leg of races. They were spearheaded by Beth Lowe who came third individually.

Beth was joined in the final race by Maya Karwa, Rosa Ragheb and Hannah Ebbrell, the team claiming silver, only five points behind the gold medal winning team.

A spokesperson for St Monica’s Primary said: “The school’s success has undoubtedly been helped by weekly run sessions coached by Anne Gregory, also a coach at Warrington AC, with the sessions emphasising fun as much as fitness.”
