MANY residents will have noticed that their bus shelters seem to be disappearing across Warrington.

With rumours swirling about whether Warrington Borough Council has axed services across the town, lots of commuters have raised their eyebrows seeing bus shelters disappear.

However, it seems that bus users' fears are misplaced, with the answer to the question being far less sinister than some may have thought.

As it happens, many of the bus shelters across Warrington were covered under the same contract - that contract has now expired, and the council has made a new deal with a different company in order to provide modern shelters.

Many will have noticed the new digital billboards appearing curbside throughout Warrington, provided by Alight Media.

The company won the contract on offer from Warrington Borough Council in the summer of 2022, and has set about replacing all bus shelters with an expiring contract.

Speaking to the Warrington Guardian, a Warrington Borough Council spokesperson said: "More than 20 years ago, ClearChannel installed in excess of 230 bus shelters across the borough as part of a commercial agreement with us.

"That agreement ended [in 2022].

"The vast majority of those that have been removed and those that remain are due to be replaced with new shelters under the agreement signed with the incoming supplier."

The spokesperson confirmed that a minority of shelters will not be replaced: “A small proportion of the original shelters are not going to be replaced as they are either no longer on a bus route or their amenity value is otherwise low."

Commuters can expect to see their own bus shelters removed and replaced as Alight Media enters its new contract with Warrington Borough Council to provide new digital shelters.
