HUNDREDS of bags of rubbish have been removed from Warrington’s streets and natural spaces thanks to a huge volunteer army.

The mammoth effort from residents across the town looks set to break records as part of this year’s Great British Spring Clean 2023.

Those involved have picked 345 bags of litter within days, including more than 100 bags from the Trans Pennine Trail between Latchford Locks and Spike Island in Widnes.

More than 50 bags have also been collected from the Sankey Canal and Sankey Valley Trail between St Helens, Warrington and Widnes.

Tony Dixon, a retired GP from Grappenhall and Keep Britain Tidy ambassador, praised the herculean effort from volunteers.

He said: “We are heading to break all records this year. We have already passed our 2021 Great British Spring Clean total of 301 bags.

“We are also close to our Great British Spring Clean 2022 total of 376 bags – and we still days left.

“Thank you to everyone supporting us. Warrington is looking better by the day.”
