A NUMBER of councillors at Warrington Borough Council are planning to scrap the Low Traffic Neighbourhood schemes.

The schemes in question are in place in Orford and Westy, and have proved to be controversial following the installation of planters that now make some roads inaccessible.

When first announced, one of the LTN schemes - Central 6 - was met with protest; a number of 'Say NO to Central 6' banners can still be found in the town, including opposite the barracks in Orford.

Now, Conservative members of Warrington Borough Council are making moves to scrap the divisive schemes.

The Tories say that they will submit a new motion for debate at the next full council meeting on April 3, which calls on the council to immediately scrap implementation of the LTNs in Orford and Westy.

Conservative councillors previously sought to halt these LTNs in June 2022, but the motion was rejected by the Labour majority.

Leader of the Conservative group, Cllr Nigel Balding, told the Warrington Guardian: "There has now been sufficient time to gather data on Westy LTN and as such the council is in a position to make a decision now, there’s no need to wait any longer.

“The road layout in Warrington is totally unsuited to these LTNs. It is clear that WBC is continuing to implement LTNs without suitable consultation and these proposals do not command the support of Warrington’s residents.

“Labour has demonstrated that it is out of touch with residents on the LTNs and Conservative councillors are calling for the LTN plans to be scrapped in Orford and Westy without any further delay.”
