IN light of International Women’s Day, an Appleton construction worker has revealed how she has navigated her way through a male-dominated industry.

Emma Winder joined Barratt Homes’ on a rotation graduate programme following her success studying Civil Engineering at The University of Aberdeen.

Having now been a construction graduate for six months, Emma is now based at Orchard Meadows in Appleton Cross.

She encourages other women to take on a wide variety of roles and benefits within the industry.

Emma said: “As women are a large percentage of the population, it is vital that they are part of this industry. More women are needed to join the construction industry in order for this to change.

“I feel that people perceive it as a job requiring physical strength, therefore women don’t consider it as a suitable career path. There’s a lot more to the industry than just bricks and mortar.

“The housebuilding industry is still seen as male-dominated, which could deter a lot of younger women from seeking a career as they may feel uncomfortable in this environment.

“That said, some might also be unaware of the possible career opportunities and progression available within the construction industry.”

Warrington Guardian:

While the industry has come a long way for the inclusion of women, there is still a long way to go until there’s an equal split of men and women occupying a range of roles.

The Office for National Statistics (ONS) reported that in the latter quarter of 2022, 2,171,000 people in the UK worked in construction. Out of those people, just 321,000 - 14.7 per cent - were women.

Emma continued: “I love the camaraderie. No two days are the same, it is a great feeling knowing you are part of a strong team all of whom are willing to teach me the trade. Every day you face new and different challenges for which solutions need to be found.

“Don’t let the idea that this is a male-dominated industry put you off. Get stuck right in, show what makes you unique and demonstrate how you can be a vital asset to the construction industry. We can make a difference by starting right now!”

Michaela Lancaster, sales director at Barratt Homes Manchester, said: “As a five-star developer, it’s important we set an example and create a diverse workplace for our employees and we pride ourselves on the opportunities available.

“We offer diversity throughout all departments within the construction industry which makes the board a diverse team.

“We’re delighted to see employees such as Emma changing the face of the industry and setting a precedent that women can and should pursue a career in homebuilding.

“We hope to see more young women getting involved in the sector in the future, and we have great admiration for Emma being an advocate for women in construction and progressing in her role as a construction graduate.”
