A SCHOOLBOY from Latchford has blown away award-winning musicians with his piano performance.

Daniel Green Lavado is 13 years old, and lives in Latchford with his parents, Ana and Dave.

The teenager is a pupil at King's Leadership Academy in Woolston, and he taught himself how to play the piano over the first Covid-19 lockdown.

Daniel appeared on the new Channel 4 show 'The Piano' on Wednesday evening, which was filmed in Leeds train station.

The show sees the presenter, Claudia Winkelman, visit different 'open pianos' across the country, and speak to the performers there - unbeknownst to them, two of the world's most celebrated performers are waiting backstage.

Mika, popstar and singer of Grace Kelly (as well as co-host of EuroVision 2022), and Lang Lang, one of the most decorated pianists in the world, were watching Daniel's performance in Leeds train station.

Speaking to Claudia Winkelman, Daniel said: "My friends think I'm a bit different - I don't play football, or do sports.

"I'm always in the music room at school."

At this point, Mika said from backstage: "That was me."

Speaking about when Daniel began to play the piano, Dave, Daniel's dad, said: "He called us upstairs after an hour on the piano and he could play the first part of Bohemian Rhapsody."

Ana, Daniel's mum, added: "It makes us feel really proud that he can make people happy."

Daniel decided to play Iris by the Goo Goo Dolls in Leeds, at which point Mika said: "I love this boy."

As Daniel began to play, Mika said: "He's really good."

Lang Lang added: "He's playing the whole band!"

The judging duo said: "There's absolutely no doubt this kid is gonna do this professionally - you either have it or you don't.

"He's got it."

The judging duo were assessing a number of different performers in Leeds on that day, with Daniel being just one of many pianists seen on the show.

Part of the show is a concert at the end of the series, held at the Royal Festival Hall - one performer from each show will be chosen to play at the festival.

Unfortunately, Daniel wasn't selected by Mika and Lang Lang, but he has been invited to attend the festival as a VIP guest.

The Piano airs at 9pm on Wednesday evenings on Channel 4.
