THE senior detective investigating the murder of a teenage girl in Culcheth say they are 'following a number of lines of enquiry'.

Brianna Ghey, aged 16, from Birchwood, died following an horrific attack on Saturday afternoon.

Det Ch Supt Mike Evans said the teenager was stabbed 'numerous times' and said there would be an increased police prescence in the area.

He said large parts of the park remain closed.

Speaking to the Warrington Guardian, Mr Evans said police were following numerous enquiries but were especially keen to trace two people seen in the area on Saturday.

He added: "We are really keen to speak to them and are appealing for them to make themselves known to us."

They are a white man and woman, in their late teens/early twenties, both with dark curly hair. The man was wearing a longish dark hooded coat and the woman had a distinctive red or purple black checked blanket-style coat and a long flowing skirt, dress or trousers.

 

Detectives also want to speak to anyone in the park from 1.30pm until 4pm yesterday, Saturday, or anyone who may have seen Brianna in the hours leading up to her death. 

He said Brianna's family were being supported by specialist officers following the tragedy.

He added: "You cannot begin to imagine how they are feeling at the tragic loss of their beautiful daughter."

He added that residents will see more police in the coming days and thanked residents for their understanding.
