MORE than half of the households in Latchford have been described as 'deprived' by the Office for National Statistics.

According to the ONS' findings from the 2021 census, 52 per cent of households in Latchford have been categorised as 'deprived' in one or more dimensions.

The dimensions of deprivation used by the ONS include education levels, housing, health, and employment status.

Using the ONS' data, this means that approximately 3,848 Latchford households - or 8,112 residents - are technically deprived.

Despite this, Latchford still boasts a higher-than-average rate of employment, with 61 per cent of working-age adults being recorded as employed.

Across England and Wales, the national average rate of employment was 57.2 per cent - nearly a full four per cent less than Latchford's average.

However, this still means that nearly 40 per cent of adults of working age in Latchford are 'economically inactive - that's almost 5,200 people over the age of 16.

That being said, around 13.1 per cent of Latchford's population is above the retirement age, meaning that the working-age adults likely to be in employment - but still 'economically inactive' - falls to approximately 4,303 residents.

Transport was assessed during the 2021 census, which revealed that almost one-in-four households in Latchford do not have access to a car or van, meaning that nearly 1,800 homes in the area rely entirely on public transport.

Despite this, 51.7 per cent of workers in Latchford drive a car or van to work - 25.4 per cent of employees work mostly from home, which is less than other areas in Warrington such as Birchwood, Great Sankey, and Culcheth.

Education levels were taken into consideration by the ONS, with one-fifth of over-16s in Latchford being recorded as possessing zero recognised qualifications - which is approximately 2,595 residents.

However, 25.9 per cent of Latchford's residents have achieved a Level 4 qualification or above.
