A TOWN centre charity has ‘rewritten the rule book when it comes to fun’ ahead of its 20th anniversary.

Sankey Street based Families United, or shortened to FUN, is celebrating 20 years in existence with a host of activities over the next 12 months.

The charity was set up in 2003 to bring families together who care for a disabled child. The aim was to offer activities that were inclusive for all, while bringing together people in similar situations.

Though FUN is a small charity, it is run by a determined team of trustees, most of whom have a child with a disability and are aware and sensitive to the different circumstances affecting each family.

Chair of trustees, Lisa Edwards, said: “We may understand the needs of our own child inside out, but we are also aware that there are families who are looking after children with very different disabilities.

“It is important that as best we can, we look to accommodate all needs. Whether this be engaging with children in an activity that focuses on their sensory needs or a full out away day at Alton Towers.

“The key message is that we want everyone to have fun. We listen to our families and engage regularly with them to ensure we run a fully inclusive activity package throughout each year.”

Every month, the charity runs a FUN club at Warrington Play and Sensory Centre. As well as sensory focused activities, the charity has hosted visits from local companies such as Zoolab and Popcats.

No two months are ever the same when it comes to FUN events, and to celebrate this year the charity will be holding a birthday celebration for its members, a fun bake off and is planning visits to Chester Zoo, the Catalyst Museum and Children’s Adventure Farm Trust.

FUN member Helen Wilde is mother to 14-year-old William, who was diagnosed with a rare metabolic condition called glut one deficiency syndrome when he was three.

She said: “Families United have provided social activities and opportunities for our son William and our whole family.

“Attending get togethers at the Puddle Project Eco site and Blooming Art have given us a safe space to meet and socialise with other families like ours.

“Just being with the other mums and chatting is so lovely. It really helps to know others understand what you are going through.”

Families United relies on the support of local businesses grants and fundraising, and without these its work would not be possible.

The cost-of-living crisis is effective everyone but FUN is determined to continue its important work.
