YOU told us what you’d like to see in the former Debenhams store at Golden Square.

The retail giant closed its doors forever in Golden Square on May 12, 2021, after collapsing at the end of 2020.

Recently, a reader letter to the Warrington Guardian claimed the immediate future of the shopping centre could be ‘secured’ by the restoration of Marks and Spencer where the department store once stood.

But not everyone agreed with this.

Here’s what you had to say:

I think they should put a super Primark in there (like Barton Square), a cafe, the works! It would definitely bring more shoppers to Warrington from surrounding towns.

M&S already have a unit that they closed. Why not make it into a NHS walk-in centre with out-of-hours GP like in Halton and move services in there like they have done in Runcorn Shopping City?

Matt Kirkham

Ridiculous idea. Marks had a unit within the Golden Square and wasn’t doing as well as it should hence the reason it closed. Gemini store is the flagship store and Marks & Spencer’s has announced they are to close a lot of other stores across the UK.

Why on earth would they do that? They are consolidating their retail outlets due to falling sales. They already have a massive store in Warrington why the hell would they open another?

Chris Dean

I personally think M&S in Warrington town centre. The cafe was busy the store was great. I miss it. I have to make a special journey to the Gemini shop and sometimes I can't be bothered.

Julie Hollinshead

Yes best idea ever – I so miss M&S food being in town.

Lorna Emery Emson

Not sure if it's too big for a M&S either way I think Golden Square isn't all that at all and needs a bit of a shake-up. So many empty stores it's a real shame.

Peri Leigh Cottam

I say move Cineworld in there. Cineworld will close down this year if they don’t. If it was in the Golden Square you’d get lots of extra impulse visits.

Andrew Ledwith

A John Lewis store would be good in there.

Helen Bourne

Realistically the only existing retailer that could fit in there is Primark, but they’re not under any obligations to take the store. Remember this unit was purpose-built with Debenhams in mind, and the extension to GS based being around Debenhams as the anchor tenant. I’m sure the building will be occupied again in the future.
