OVER the last few years, a number of high street stores have vanished from Warrington.
Some have closed for good, while some have opted for a solely online approach.
We’ve taken a look at some of those which have closed since 2019.
Mothercare
Back in November 2019, it was confirmed that Mothercare had gone into administration.
As a result, it closed all of its remaining stores in the UK – including the one on Junction Nine Retail Park in Warrington.
Mothercare had been a staple on the high street since 1961.
Topshop/Topman
On February 1, 2021, it was announced that online fashion giant ASOS was buying Topshop, Topman, Miss Selfridge and HIIT.
But in a major blow to retail, it closed all the stores for an entirely online model.
This meant the Golden Square’s Topshop/Topman site was permanently closed.
And the unit still remains empty today.
Dorothy Perkins
Dorothy Perkins was another Golden Square store to be lost in 2021 after falling into administration in 2020.
The fashion retailer was bought by Boohoo from failed retail group Arcadia, along with Wallis and Burton.
But like Topshop/Topman, Dorothy Perkins is now solely online.
Debenhams
The retail giant closed its doors forever in Golden Square on May 12, 2021, after collapsing at the end of 2020.
Warrington’s Debenhams was described as an ‘anchor’ store and was set over three floors.
The future of the huge empty unit still remains unknown.
Oasis
In April 2020, it was announced that all Oasis and Warehouse stores would close indefinitely and all online sales will be stopped.
This came after administrators said they were unable to find a buyer for the business.
Oasis previously had a popular unit at Golden Square.
Laura Ashley
Laura Ashley, which had a unit on Riverside Retail Park, announced the permanent closure of 70 sites in March 2020.
After the first lockdown in June 2020, Warrington’s store briefly reopened to launch a huge closing down sale.
The brand remains online and at retailers nationwide.
Carphone Warehouse
The news that Carphone Warehouse was permanently closing its stores in the UK was announced in March 2020.
The retailer closed its 531 branches, including the one in Golden Square.
The company’s phone sales moved to both online and to Carphone-branded areas within the company’s larger Currys PCWorld shops.
