THE village of Lymm is mourning the death of one of its oldest residents, as a beloved member of the community has died aged 100.

Irene Lloyd turned 100 in September, and celebrated her centenary in style with family and friends.

Sadly, Irene passed away on Friday, December 9, in Warrington Hospital, after battling a short illness.

She was one of the first people in the country to receive a birthday card from His Majesty King Charles after she turned 100 on September 25.

Irene worked on a farm in Oughtrington for a number of years in her younger days, and was particularly fond of the pigs that were kept there.

She worked on the farm from the age of 14, and said that pigs 'have a really bad press as being mucky - they're in fact very clean animals.'

Irene's son and carer, Ian, spoke to the Warrington Guardian at the time of Irene's - Rene, to her friends - birthday, saying: "Her mantra is 'You've got to have a laugh' - so many of her carers who visit her at home or look after her adore her sense of fun.

"One care home matron told me 'When we can't find the staff the first place we go to is Rene's room where they are sat on the bed in a row, having a laugh with her.'

"As she says 'You can't be miserable.'"

Irene Lloyd's funeral will be held on Thursday, December 29 - which is also the anniversary of her wedding.

Ian said: "She was the youngest centenarian you could meet, with a wicked sense of humour and a kind heart.

"I am truly heartbroken and will miss her forever more.

"She asked me to tell people after she had gone: 'Remember me with a smile, as I have had a wonderful life.'"

Irene Lloyd's funeral will be held at St Peter's Church, Oughtrington, at midday on Thursday, December 29.
