THE Guiseley AFC supporter who entered the pitch and swapped Warrington Town FC goalkeeper Tony Thompson's drink bottle during Saturday's FA Trophy clash has been issued with a ban.

During a break in play in the second half, Yellows summer signing Thompson, 28, was ‘knocked sick’ when he took a drink from what he thought was his bottle placed inside the goal, only to then realise the container had been swapped by a Guiseley fan for one full of urine.

The former Altrincham FC netminder’s reaction was to squirt the said fan with the bottle’s contents, a move which led to Thompson being sent off.

Investigations are continuing around the wider issue, including identifying the person who provided the urine sample.

Guiseley AFC have issued an updated statement.

"We can confirm that whilst we await the outcome of the investigation from Cheshire Police and Warrington Town FC, the individual identified as having entered the pitch at the Cantilever Stadium is banned indefinitely, with immediate effect, from attending all Guiseley AFC home and away matches," says the statement.

"When the investigation is completed and we can ascertain the level of their involvement in the wider incident we may review the length of the ban if deemed appropriate.

"This is thanks to several emails from fellow supporters, images provided by those in attendance and linking these to the widely circulated footage. We would like to thank all those who have contributed.

"We have submitted all evidence we have to West Yorkshire Police and asked that they pass this onto their colleagues at Cheshire Police who have been in contact with Warrington Town, so they can continue their investigations into the contents of the bottle and the events that followed.

"Once we receive the match footage from Warrington Town we will continue in our efforts to identify the individual’s accomplices and take necessary action against these.

"Guiseley AFC Supporters’ Club have also banned this individual from travelling on their match day coaches."

Saturday's incident outraged followers of the game on social media and reports appeared in national newspapers on Sunday and across digital media over the weekend, while footage which has gone viral on social media showed in six seconds a man climbing the perimeter wall behind Thompson’s goal and making the bottle exchange before leaping back on to the terrace.

“Today I fell out of love with the GAME,” said Thompson on Twitter.

“I’ve been called many names but for someone to p*** in my bottle, for me to drink it and then to be told I wasn’t allowed to react because I’m a player is outrageous.

“That person has put me my family’s health at risk and knocked me sick.”

Warrington Town issued a statement on Sunday.

“The club is supporting goalkeeper Tony Thompson following the well-publicised incident that led to his sending off in the FA Trophy defeat to Guiseley at Cantilever Park on Saturday,” it said.

“Our priority is ensuring that Tony is given the support he needs given the attention that the story is receiving, and we know he is thankful for the messages of support he has received, particularly from other goalkeepers.”

The Town statement also revealed that Cheshire Police had become involved.

“The process of reviewing the video footage is ongoing. We note the statement from Guiseley AFC and will be providing them with the video footage,” it said.

“It goes without saying that the incident is deplorable and has no place in non-league football, football or society in general.

“We have also been contacted by Cheshire Police regarding the incident.

“We will await the referee’s report and FA charge before deciding what action to take regarding the red card.”

Warrington Town manager Mark Beesley spoke about the incident after the final whistle of a tie which Yellows lost 1-0 after conceding in the 90th minute.

“I don’t think I’ll ever be involved in anything like that again,” he said.

“The Guiseley staff apologised – it was disgusting and there’s no place in life for things like that.

“I think the referee has completely lost control after that – if someone urinates in my bottle and I drink it, I’m going to throw it away. To send him off for throwing the bottle away is a disgrace.

“It’s hard to talk about the football when such a big incident like that happens.

“From our point of view, the welfare of our players is paramount and what Tony was subjected to was disgraceful.

“Whoever did it should hang their head in shame and never be allowed into a football game again."
