AN unauthorised encampment of travellers has been granted temporary permission to remain in place in Birchwood.

The site was first reported two weeks ago, and has been the subject of controversy among Birchwood residents.

Now, the encampment of seven caravans has been given temporary permission to stay on the council-owned land, and the council has since provided provisions for temporary toilet facilities.

The site, off Ordnance Avenue, has led to complaints to the council and police from local residents, with one taking to social media claiming that he and his dog were nearly run over by vehicles from the site.

According to Cheshire West and Chester county council, an officer will be sent to the encampment tomorrow - November 10 - to assess the impact the site is having on the area.

A number of residents have complained that vehicles from the site are driving on footpaths in and around Birchwood Forest Park, which is close to the unauthorised encampment.

According to the latest information from the county council - which was last updated on Wednesday, November 9 - the group is 'temporarily permitted to remain.'

The next step from the council will involve 'officers to attend [the site] to review vehicle access on footpaths.'

Since being established, the council has provided the encampment with portable toilets - or 'portaloos.'

When asked by the Warrington Guardian about an update on a traveller transit site for the town - as well as the £2 million earmarked for the project - a Warrington Borough Council spokesperson said: "We are continuing to work with our partners to identify a suitable traveller transit site in the borough.

"The need for this is fully established in the submitted proposed local plan that was subject to examination in public in September."
