CONNOR Woods found the net twice as Warrington Town pulled off a fine home win against South Shields to progress to the FA Trophy second round.

The 24-year-old striker, who started his loan period from Southport in the previous round 2-1 win at Hebburn Town earlier this month, notched the second and third goals in Yellows' 3-1 success against their fierce north east rivals.

Town, knocked out of the Cheshire Senior Cup against Stalybridge Celtic in midweek, went into the contest sat fourth in the Northern Premier League, one place below their full-time opponents.

And Shields would have travelled eager not to succumb to a repeat outcome, having lost to Yellows in the play-offs in each of the past two completed Northern Premier League seasons.

The result, therefore, would have been a sickening one for the visitors.

Woods gave an early warning of his threat as a curling effort needed saving at the far post.

Then six minutes after Tom Hannigan (31) put Town in front, Woods was on the spot to prod home a low cross from Matty McDonald.

He banged home the killer third in the 59th minute from six yards after Shields frontman Lewis Allesandra had given the visitors hope with their only goal in the 43rd minute.
