In April, we launched the Warrington Guardian Best of 2022 competition to find the best that Warrington has to offer in 20 categories.

Each week, readers nominated their favourite cafes, gyms and pubs as well as fish chip shops, beer gardens and fitness instructors and we put together a shortlist of the town’s popular places with an overall winner for each category voted by you, the readers.

The winners are all featured in a special supplement in this week’s Warrington Guardian – in shops on Thursday, October 20 – where you can read about each category champion and find out how they took one of the Best of 2022 crowns.

Here are the 20 winners, who will all be appearing in the Winners’ Supplement:

Best for Hair: Ashleigh Hair and Beauty, Horsemarket Street, Warrington

Ashley Withers opened the town centre salon nine years ago without a single client on the books and having never set foot in Warrington. He relied on word of mouth and promotion on social media to build up his clientele before moving to new premises on Horsemarket Street.

Best Pies: To Pie For, Station Road North, Fearnhead

The Fearnhead Bakery makes a full English breakfast pie as well as one filled with pork, pistachio and apricot - a customer favourite. A taste test at our Warrington Guardian offices gave the barbecue pulled pork and cheese creation full marks.

Best for Nails: The Pink Room, Raikes Close, Great Sankey, Warrington

Owner Dawn Vago is a professional singer and part time cruise director, who runs The Pink Room in Great Sankey. She has just opened a second salon in Lymm – Vago Champagne and Beauty Bar.

Best Pub: The Seven Woods, Westbrook

The lockdown food hub is an award-winning pub run by Vicki and Lez Anders in Westbrook and it beat off tough competition from seven other venues in Warrington.

Best for Fitness: The Female Fitness Academy (now known as Sigma Rehab and Fitness), Unit 4, John Street, Warrington

Dynamic duo Robyn Ablott and Claire Gregory were made redundant ten years ago and launched their new business aimed at helping mums recover from childbirth and banishing fit shaming.

Best Fish and Chips: Fish Net, Thelwall Lane, Warrington

Maria and Savva Mylona serve the best fish and chips in the town from their shop on Thelwall Lane in Latchford.

Best for Beauty: Amoda Beauty, 7 London Road, Warrington

This “hidden gem at the heart of Stockton Heath” topped the table for beauty salons and therapists, offering bespoke plans for each client at the London Road business.

Best for Breakfast: Toast, Knutsford Road, Latchford

Old school friends Stuart Lawton and Katherine Hibbert opened the café in the Railway Building on Knutsford Road earlier this year and are set to open a second venue Toast Treats soon.

Best for Afternoon Tea: CJ’s Coffee House and Tea Room, Warrington Road, Penketh, Warrington

Ben and Alison Ashwin serve “lush cakes, wonderful sandwiches and huge scones” so it’s no wonder they scooped the top award for their afternoon tea.

Best Independent Shop: Lizard Inc Records, Legh Street, Warrington

Ste Davidson bought his first record – The Beatles’ Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band – at the age of seven and music became a way of life. The popular record store opened five years and became a hot spot for second hand vinyl.

Best Roast Dinner: Bold Street House, Egypt Street, Warrington

The mouth-watering roast chicken dinner sharing platter comes with crispy roast potatoes, buttery greens and roasted vegetables as well as cauliflower cheese, Yorkshire puddings and lots of gravy.

Best for Pizza: Louie’s Pizza, Warrington Market

Named after four-year-old Louie Glover, the popular pizza place is run by the youngster’s dad and uncle – Tom and James Glover – and are about to celebrate the business’ third birthday.

Best Beer Garden: The Ferry Tavern, Station Road, Penketh

The popular waterside pub that has a beer garden view is the perfect place to enjoy a drink in the sun.

Andy and Jade Mulholland took over at the pumps in 2005 and they have just recorded the pub’s 25th consecutive year in CAMRA’s The Good Beer Guide.

Best for Kids: Gulliver’s World, Shackleton Close, Old Hall, Warrington

Promising giant adventures for families with children aged two to 13, Gulliver’s World is the perfect place to spend a day out with the 100-acre theme park boasting more than 30 rides across six themed areas.

Best Burger: Dead Eyes, Bridge Street, Warrington

The dedicated army of fans of this town centre pub can’t enough of their best-selling burger – a Bourbon glazed cheeseburger with bacon, cheese, lettuce and tomato served on a brioche bun with fries.

Best Café: Gourmand! Sankey Street, Warrington

The café with a French twist celebrated winning the Best Café award before they’d even reached their first birthday. Owners Julien Ramos and Olivia Le have clearly made a good first impression with their customers!

Best Gym: Ryfield’s Gym, Ryfield’s Village, Arena Gardens, Warrington

This popular place for a workout has members saying it’s a pleasure to be part of their gym. Husband and wife Paul and Becky Warburton took over seven years ago offering classes and sessions for residents as well as members of the local community.

Best for Dessert: White Lace Bakery, Market Place, Golden Square Shopping Centre and Warrington Road, Culcheth

Hot on the heels of opening their second shop in Culcheth, White Lace Bakery scooped the award for their delicious desserts – chocolate orange brownie, milky bar blondie and Nutella cookies.

Best Curry: Monpura, Walton Road, Stockton Heath

Serving unique south Asian cuisine, Monpura has only been opened ten months but has already proved popular with customers, who can’t get enough of the chicken ratargul, lamb khubsurat and zil mil chicken.

Best Restaurant: Tao, Baldwin’s Terrace, Padgate Lane, Warrington

Tao Cantonese was the final winner of our Best of 2022 competition with visitors praising the restaurant’s crispy shredded beef coated in a Cantonese sauce, speciality dim sum and appetisers and the deluxe prawn toast that has so much prawn filling it’s difficult to see the toast!
