HEAVY traffic is building up around Warrington this afternoon, Saturday, as a result of the M56 being closed.

National Highways announced that part of the M56 westbound will be closed this weekend as part of a £23 million project to replace the A533 expressway bridge over the motorway.

It is closed between junction 11, Preston Brook, and junction 12, Rocksavage Interchange, to install new safety barriers in preparation for the new bridge.

The carriageway has been closed since 9pm last night, Friday, and will reopen at 6am on Monday, October 10.

The closures are resulting in heavy traffic and long delays around Warrington this afternoon, with queues building up on the M6 on the approach to Lymm.

Congestion is also stretching back to the A533 Western Link and A557 Weston Point expressway in Runcorn as traffic diverts from the closure and re-joins at junction 12, Runcorn.

Heavy traffic is also reported on the A56 through Sutton Weaver.
