WORK to demolish one of Warrington’s ‘ugliest’ buildings has now started.
Workmen have moved onto the site of New Town House in the town centre this week as the major demolition project begins.
The area has been boarded off to the public, with danger signs put up warning people to stay clear.
Construction workers can be seen carrying out the demolition of the building, with part of the footpath on Scotland Road closed off while the work is being carried out.
The complex was previously the offices of Warrington Borough Council, but plans have now been approved to build 900 apartments in its place.
More than 1,000 council employees have been relocated to the newly built Time Square modern offices in the heart of the town centre.
The approved proposals for homes state the new complex will be made up of six block buildings measuring up to nine stories high.
The council have previously planned to demolish the office space, proposing that turning the site into housing will ‘reduce the risk’ of needing to build on green spaces in the borough.
This project is part of a large-scale £99million town regeneration scheme that has been passed by planning chiefs, involving demolishing several sites around the perimeter of Cockhedge Shopping Centre to build homes, a hotel and new office spaces.
With demolition currently in progress, it is yet to be confirmed when new work to build the apartment blocks will begin to be carried out.
