FOOD hubs across Warrington are taking part in the 'Getting Toasty' scheme.

The project, which is being coordinated by The Bread and Butter Thing (TBBT), aims to provide support to those who will struggle to heat their homes this year.

The organisation regularly distributes food to its members, who pay a discounted price for weekly food shop items.

Family shops include at least £35 of food, and members pay £7.50 for this - individuals can also collect shopping for a price of £4.

Its new initiative will see some of its food hubs open for two hours before the food is distributed to its members.

The hubs in Warrington that will be taking part are Birchwood Church of England Primary School (from 11am on a Thursday), Westy Community Centre (from 11:30am on a Friday), and The Old School on Fairfield Street (from 12pm on a Monday).

Doors will open for two hours, providing a 'warm welcome' to anyone who wishes to join.

The initiative is part of a scheme that will assist those who are being hit hardest by rising fuel costs and energy bills.

This scheme is set to last until March next year.

Mark Game, CEO of the organisation, said: "Each week, we will open the doors for two hours prior to our shopping service and welcome people in from the cold and the rain.

"These spaces will offer people the chance to meet friends and fellow members for a hot drink and maybe even a biscuit.

"Bring your crossword, your knitting, a good book or just come for a chat and to collect your shopping.

"We hope that as fuel bills rise and keeping warm at home becomes more challenging, TBBT can offer a friendly place to get toasty."

The scheme is being supported by Sainsbury's and Premier Foods - who are providing 50,000 'Cup a Soup' packs to food hubs across the country.
