A CLAMPDOWN on under age drinking proved to be a success in Newton.

As part of their anti-social behaviour campaign, St Helens police teamed up with Trading Standards officers to crack down on youths buying and drinking alcohol.

During the scheme a 27-year-old man was caught leaving an off-licence and passing a carrier bag containing bottles of cider to three youths on April 18.

He was issued with an £80 fixed penalty notice for buying alcohol on behalf of a person under the age of 18.

PC Kevin Ward said: "Merseyside Police takes under age drinking extremely seriously and the sale of alcohol to anyone aged under 18 will not be tolerated."

Anyone with information about under age drinking can contact Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
