A NEWTON man who broke a taxi driver's hip, has been jailed for nine months.

On Friday, Liverpool Crown Court heard how Robert Sharp, of Bollington Avenue, had a long-standing grievance with a taxi firm.

The court heard how on February 20 Gordon Canning, aged 49, was in a chip shop in Weedon Avenue, Newton, when he was pushed from behind by 33-year-old Sharp and fell to the floor.

Sharp made various comments which Mr Canning did not understand and then left.

As a result of the assault Mr Canning suffered a broken right hip and he had to undergo surgery.

David Evans, prosecuting, said Mr Canning may require a hip replacement and would be unable to work for nine months.

"He is still in a lot of pain and is wary of going out and keeps looking over his shoulder", he added.

Sharp, a dad-of-four said he had just snapped' and pushed Mr Canning but had not intended to harm him.

He pleaded guilty to causing grievous bodily harm.

Charles Lander, defending, said Sharp had made a full and frank admission.

He explained that for 14 months Sharp felt he was a victim of the taxi firm Mr Canning worked for, but added that while in custody has started an anger management course and is determined to lead a law abiding life.
