THE result of a post mortem on a body found in Burtonwood remains unknown.
The body was discovered in a pond near the Old Moat House on the edge of Burtonwood on Wednesday night.
Merseyside Police officers were called to the scene near Gorsey Lane just before 8pm, after a passer by had found the body in a pond.
A police spokesman said: "It is thought that it had been there for some time.
"The scene has been sealed for further forensic examination and enquiries are under way.
"At this stage the death is being treated as unexplained."
Helicopters and police cars swarmed the area on Thursday morning as the body was taken away.
Detectives believe the body is a man, but it is badly decomposed and officers are awaiting the result of a Home Office post mortem.
It is likely to take place later on Friday.
Police are searching missing persons files.
