MATT Dufty is all set for his home debut as Warrington Wolves bid to ease relegation threat by beating Toulouse Olympique.

The former Canterbury Bulldogs full-back, who was impressive on debut at Huddersfield Giants on July 30 before injuring his foot, will play through the pain barrier to add important ‘pace and knowledge’ to The Wire in what is a crucial game for both sides.

Josh Thewlis will step aside for him and contend for the right-wing spot with Greg Minikin and Connor Wrench.

“I think it’s important to have him for this game. We brought him over to Warrington for a reason,” said Wolves head coach Daryl Powell.

“I think he showed against Huddersfield in the only game he has played for us that he’s a talented player.

“Josh Thewlis was pretty good last week, but Matt Dufty coming into the team gives us a bit of a lift.

“He had a scan on his foot, it’s shown that it’s nothing serious. He’ll have to put up with a bit of pain but rugby league players do that all the time.

“He’s been class in training with everything he does – his communication, his running game in all areas of the field, his understanding of the game. Everything that we thought we were bringing him over for he’s been exceptional in since he’s been here.”

Powell seems him as a potent weapon in good attacking positions.

“His understanding of the game and where he wants to get to with his running game, where he’s going to pass the ball when he gets to those areas, he’s got a really deep knowledge of that,” he said.

“I think he’s important for us in the back field too. He’s not a power athlete in terms of size, but he’s fast and knowledgeable which make him a really dangerous player to defend against, so that’s why he’s so important to us.”

Powell said he still needs to make the call on who will play on the right wing.

Connor Wrench slotted in there last week, but Powell has also called on the services of Minikin and Thewlis in the role previously.

“I’ve got a call to make on the wings. Obviously we’ve got Greg Minikin, Connor Wrench and Josh Thewlis, so I need to make a call on that. I’ll leave that until tomorrow," he said.

“We’ve got some competition for places there and sometimes it’s a call on form, sometimes it’s a call on my gut and hopefully I get that right.”

Powell is happy with the week’s preparations since the loss at Wigan last time out.

“It’s been a light week because that was a tough game against Wigan, so we’ve looked after the boys this week," said Powell.

“I just want us to go into this game feeling fresh with a real knowledge of what we’re doing so there’s been a lot more of breaking things down and making sure there’s clarity on what we’re trying to do.”
