A WILDFLOWER meadow is set to be cultivated in Paddington, with the help of local groups and Warrington Borough Council.

The New Cut Heritage and Ecology Trail group is set on transforming Paddington Meadows - which used to be land for grazing - into a 30-hectare wildflower meadow.

The ecology group has been introducing wildflowers to the area and has seen an increase in the diversity of insects and birdlife attracted to the meadow.

In 2021, the group began to clear brambles and blackthorn in the meadow in consultation with Warrington Borough Council - this year, a contractor was brought in to cut, bale, and remove grasses from the area.

In April, wild seeds were sown, and the group is hoping that they'll be on full display over the summer months.

The project itself is being financed by the Heritage Lottery Fund, and in future will be maintained by New Cut Heritage and Ecology Trail group volunteers.

The group said: "This project is a wonderful example of cooperation between a volunteer group and local authority using National Lottery Heritage Funding which will give a real benefit for the local wildlife and a joy for those members of the public on the footpaths."
