AN ambitious plan to transform Warrington has been unveiled to the town's business leaders.

The head of Warrington Borough Council's environment and regeneration team Andy Farrall outlined to delegates at the town's International Business Centre how they want the town to be transformed in the next 25 years.

As previously reported in the Warrington Guardian, plans include waterside developments, improved transport links and a complete revamp of the town centre.

He said: "We want to be an outstanding town in the north west.

"It is time to drop the old new town image and move on.

"We want to make communities more sustainable and tackle disadvantage and we want to demonstrate how Warrington is a key economic driver in the region.

"At the moment, we're too quiet about the town's success."

And he said improvements in the town centre would be key.

"We need to do something in Bridge Street which is delcining rapidly and also address the issues surrounding the dreadful multi-storey car park near the market.

"We have a market but the building is shot."

The plans also include a vision of Bank Park being the town's best park with leisure events and concerts being held there.

Winwick Road also needs a makeover according to Mr Farrall, who spoke to representatives of more than 30 businesses earlier this month.

"Its image needs to change to provide an appropriate gateway into the town."

New homes are also on the agenda with the former site of the police training camp in Bruche being a possible place for a new urban village - similar to the one currently being completed on the former RAF Burtonwood site at Chapleford.
