A FORMER Lymm High School student helped Great Britain top the medal table in World Cup Rowing III in Switzerland.

Ex-Warrington Rowing Club ace Lucy Glover, 23, who now rows for Edinburgh University, won silver in a new-look women's quadruple sculls on the Lake of the Gods in Lucerne on Sunday.

It is an impressive improvement from the fourth-place finish in World Cup Rowing I in Serbia at the end of May and is good preparation for the forthcoming World Championships.

The women’s quad, which also featured Kyra Edwards, Jess Leyden and Georgie Brayshaw, finished behind the Chinese crew.

Glover said: “I’m happy with the way we stuck to our plan, we made our moves when we wanted to.

"It was a great race and team effort, so I’m really proud of the girls.”

British Rowing director of performance Louise Kingsley said: “We have had two good World Cups in Belgrade and here and I’m very pleased with the results but we need to balance these performances with the perspective that some nations are not racing and others haven’t boated their top crews due to Covid.

"We expect that by the time we get to the World Championships there will be stronger and far more competitive fields. We’ve got to keep our heads but know that what we are doing is on the right track and it should give us confidence to keep building towards the World Championships.”

This is also the start of the journey to Paris 2024, where Glover intends to add to her Olympics bow in Tokyo.

Her rise to the Tokyo Olympics last year was seen as a rapid one as far as senior international competition is concerned, with her debut only having been made at the European Championships earlier in 2021.

A silver medal-winning performance got the season off to a strong start though.

Glover, who was introduced to the sport through a partnership between Warrington Rowing Club and Lymm High School, previously played her part in three medal-winning quadruple sculls crews at the World Rowing U23s Championships, picking up gold in 2017 and 2019 and a bronze in 2018.
