AN investigation has been launched following the death of a man in Widnes.

Cheshire Police has confirmed that a 61-year-old had sadly died following reports of an industrial accident in the Desoto Road area.

Officers attended the area, which is home to a large rail freight terminal.

An investigation into the circumstances of the incident is now underway, led by the force and supported by the Health and Safety Executive.

Specialist officers are supporting the man’s family through this difficult time.

A spokesman for Cheshire Police said: “At roughly 4.30am on Monday, July 4, officers responded to an industrial incident that occurred on Desoto Road, Widnes.

“Officers attended and found that a 61-year-old man had sadly passed away.

“An investigation into the incident has been launched by Cheshire Police with support from the Health and Safety Executive.

“The man’s next of kin have been informed and are being supported by specialist officers.”

A Health and Safety Executive spokesman confirmed that it is aware of an incident and is working with Cheshire Police, which is leading the investigation.

Meanwhile, an Eddie Stobart spokesman added: "It is with regret that we can confirm that an incident occurred on July 4, which unfortunately resulted in the fatality of an employee.

"A full investigation is underway, and we are cooperating fully with the authorities to establish the circumstances surrounding this tragic accident.

"Our thoughts are with the family at this extremely sad time.”
