APPROACHING 1,000 schoolchildren came together to celebrate this month's arrival of the Birmingham Commonwealth Games by participating in a sporting event at Orford Jubilee Hub.

A variety of physical activities were laid on for more than 800 primary-age pupils by Warrington School Sport Partnership to embrace the theme of the Commonwealth Games, with activities such as cycling, athletics, tennis, lacrosse, football, kinball, archery and orienteering on offer.

Woolston CE Aided Primary School and High Legh Primary School each finished in first place in two competitions, while events were also won by Christchurch, Great Sankey, Dallam, St Margaret's and Oakwood.

Around 100 secondary school students led and officiated the various activities.

The morning started with an opening ceremony, with each school parading around the track, watching a dance performance on the centre stage and then joining in the mass warm-up led by Sam Hickey of Purple Gecko.

Following a day of teamwork, determination and fun, the children departed with happy smiling faces as well as participation certificates decorated with Perry the Bull – the official mascot for the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham later this month.
