WARRINGTON Borough Council has announced a series of major changes which will see some roads become access-only - with a new bus gate also planned.
The council has revealed the proposals in the Orford and Westy areas under its Central 6 Streets Plan.
This will see ‘low traffic neighbourhoods’ trialled within the town with hopes of cutting off ‘rat runs’ and improving traffic levels, road safety and air pollution.
However the scheme has been met with huge anger.
Here is what some readers had to say about the changes:
I’m yet to speak to anyone who thinks this is a good idea! What about all the schools within the area that’s been cordoned off? How will parents drop off and then go to work? And heaven forbid when the motorway closes! It’s bad enough now, never mind when this comes into force!
Sarah Kane
It’s ludicrous. It’s going to cause traffic chaos. Also, what about those of us that live on the main roads why are we second class citizens why are we having more traffic passing and stationary in front of our houses causing us to suffer with heavier pollution....are we not entitled to clean air also? I have written to our local MP but no reply which is what expected
Julie Ann Carney
Yes, it's going to cause gridlocked traffic on Marsh House Lane and Orford Road causing loads of pollution from queuing cars so no benefit for cleaner streets all for one bus an hour to go down Halfields Road. Madness
Brian Davies
Looking at clean air - so we push more cars onto the other main routes: Winwick Rd, Long Lane and Orford Lane through Padgate and therefore make these areas even more congested, increasing traffic jams and therefore more pollution as vehicles are standing still for longer!
Jill Bruce
Oakwood Ave primary is a large school and many people, myself included, when dropping off or picking up children have to cross either Marsh House lane or Padgate Lane and Orford Road. It’s already difficult and will be a nightmare with these changes and if Grange Ave becomes a no through road then heaven help us when the swing bridge is off… The traffic will be queuing right back to Kingsway lights
Carol O’Hanlon
God help us on Padgate Lane. Marsh House Lane is bad with all the parked cars to get through
Karen Bradbury Healey
Yes 100% this should not go ahead! How about using the money for proper street lighting which actually lights the streets up! Sorting out the pot holes would also be good! There is a grid outside my house which has collapsed and has still not been fixed from two years ago! Rant over
Vicky Parker
This is being pushed by councillors who live in these areas. It has been tried in the past and failed so they are using another angle... Councillors are just out for themselves and they all need investigating like Liverpool councillors have been... Too much money wasted on unnecessary idiotic ideas. How is this a priority surely there are more pressing things to spend the money on?
Nicola Dutton
YES just move more traffic to other already busy areas, plus as a resident I will have to go all round the houses to get to my home from work adding god knows how long to my journey. Residents only found out about this plan when the yellow signs went up days later we got a leaflet. If this goes ahead will definitely have to move. Absolutely fuming
Leanne Spencer
Yes, yes, yes scrap it before it starts. The roads are bad enough without the council trying to make changes. There’s much more they can be putting their time and money into round Warrington
