A SURGE of distraction burglaries across Warrington has caused police to issue a warning to the public.
"In the past two months we have had about 20 burglaries which is way, way off the scale," said Detective Constable Stuart Eales.
Police are dealing with reports of groups of men, under the guise of being from the water board or police, forcing their way into people's homes and making off with cash.
DC Eales wants to warn people against opening their doors to strangers.
"Anyone legitimate will go out of their way to identify themselves," he said.
"Don't be scared to get them to show you ID through the letterbox or window before you open the door."
He also wants people to report any incidents like this to his team.
"Often when we speak to neighbours after a burglary they say that someone had tried to come into their home before," said DC Eales.
If you see anything suspicious or if someone tries to enter your home, call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111, or Warrington Police on 652222.
