NEIGHBOURHOOD Weekender is edging closer.

One of the renowned bands taking to the Victoria Park festival at The Big Top stage is The Amazons – and they are keen to continue the trend of making audiences feel euphoric.

Their set on Sunday, May 29 comes soon after the release of their new song Bloodrush.

Distinctly more upbeat sounding, frontman of the four-piece band from Reading, Matt Thomson, says the band has tried ‘something different’ with their latest single.

“We just wanted something where you can feel euphoric and something different,” said Matt.

“That song for me is about feeling alive.

“Over the last couple of years, what once we might have considered as trivial luxury in going out and connecting with other humans or however you get your kicks.

“It’s more about that chemical alchemy that happens in your body when you feel alive and human.

“Those things have been criminally dismissed until the last couple of years when life was on pause and we realised how integral that was to feeling alive.

“It’s one thing writing a song acoustic or a piano and another thing arranging it with the whole band.”

The song took a while to come together but when it did it came with a Motown-esque beat.

However, their upcoming album How Will I Know If Heaven Will Find Me will not all be on a lighter note.

The 28-year-old added: “I think as we continue to tease the album between now and September they will hear something more typical of The Amazons.

“It really is the heaviest album we’ve made and most melodic too.

“We’re just a band who don’t know how to stick to one sound. We’ve got a lot of different sounds going on.

“It massively allows for more experimentation too – that’s how we keep excited.

“This record is the record that we felt we could experiment with the most.

“It’s our most proactive record and that’s the model of how we want to do things from now on.”

And they will be bringing that and their catalogue of rock songs to Weekender very soon.

“We’re excited to come back to Warrington. A crew member of ours is a Warrington lad called Cal Bate who is our touring sound engineer.

“He’s a big fan of Warrington so he is probably the most excited for this weekend.

“After the last couple of years getting back to proper festivals is great.

“There are quite a few bands that have put out some amazing music but haven’t been able to go out on tour due to the pandemic.

“Baby Queen is on our stage and there are some bands we really want to check out like Inhaler.

“This is one we have been looking forward to for a while.”
