Council’s message to those yet to receive council tax rebate

In February, the Government announced a national council tax rebate for certain households to help towards soaring energy bills.

Every eligible household across the country is set to receive £150 this spring to help combat the cost of living crisis.

Legally, the Government has set a requirement that all councils must make these rebate payments to all eligible residents from April 2022 and by September 2022 latest.

Warrington Borough Council began to process the rebate for residents who pay by direct debit earlier this month, with many having now received it.

Some have not however, nor have residents who pay their council tax by other means, and on this the local authority has issued another update.

A spokesman today, Thursday, said: “We have now paid out over £8million in council tax energy rebates to 54,000 households.

“In some cases, we require further details before we can make a payment. We will be writing to those customers to resolve any queries.

“For those residents who do not pay their council tax by direct debit, we are currently testing the process and form needed to apply for the rebate.

“This should be completed by the middle of June. The application form will then be made available on our website.

“We understand any delays are frustrating, but we have to follow Government guidance and ensure payments are issued correctly.”

Residents who pay their council tax bill via direct debit do not need to apply, as they will receive their rebate automatically.

For households in bands A to D that do not pay by direct debit, an application form will be made available on the council’s website by mid-next month.

This was due to be available by mid-May, and it will allow residents to give details of which bank account the rebate should be paid.
