LATCHFORD children were walked to school last week by community heroes from across Warrington.
The event, Walking with Heroes, was introduced five years ago and consists of various heroes coming together to show the children the roles they play within the community.
It also helps to help to promote road safety and Healthy Schools week.
This year, Our Lady’s Catholic Primary School children took part in the special day on Friday, May 20.
The children were greeted a short walk away from the school at 8am by the 75 Engineer Regiment, a reserve battalion in the British Army, along with Warrington firefighters and members of Cheshire Police.
Before setting off to school, the youngsters were shown various equipment as well as body armour and military uniforms.
They were also allowed to have a look around and sit in police, fire and military vehicles.
Our Lady’s pupils then formed up in pairs and chose a hero to walk to school with.
After a successful day, the school has already booked in again for next year.
Adam Kee, second lieutenant from the with 75 Engineer Regiment, said: “It is good to give something back to the local community.
“We have a lot of people from different squadrons in the north west regions and it could be some of the schoolchildren’s parents who we have in our unit.
“We have some good kids here who are very enthusiastic about the army.”
Ssgt Lee McGuiness added: “It is not all about recruiting – it is about community engagement as well and that’s really important.”
