WARRINGTON West railway station in Chapelford has won an award.
The site, which opened in 2019, won an award for the best kept station in Warrington and Halton.
Cllr Steve Parish (Labour – Chapelford and Old Hall) presented the award, in the shape of the old British Railways ‘totem’, to staff at the station last Thursday.
Cllr Parish, who worked for British Rail in the 1970s, has been involved with council officers in trying to secure a better service at the station, after cuts during Covid left the station with just one stopping train an hour in each direction.
Timetable changes to address congestion in Manchester will see express services return to the station next December in the morning and evening peak, along with an extra off-peak stopping train between Liverpool and Warrington Central with a fast connection to Manchester.
Cllr Parish said: “It’s great to add this award to the award for the station’s design, and passenger numbers are building up again despite the poor frequency.
“Warrington has lost out because of the cuts in Manchester, but we’ll keep pressing for a better service.”
