POLICE have launched an arson investigation following a fire in a disused building in Penketh.

The blaze occurred at around 7.30pm yesterday evening, Sunday, near to where South Lane becomes Farnworth Road.

One fire engine from Penketh Fire Station was dispatched to the scene after receiving reports of the fire.

On arrival at the scene, firefighters discovered that the incident was as a result of a mattress being set alight.

The crew used a hose reel jet to extinguish the flames and also utilised a thermal imaging camera to monitor the temperature and check that the fire had not spread further.

A spokesman for Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service said: “Deliberate ignition is suspected to be the cause of a fire in a disused building.

“Firefighters informed the police of the nature of the fire.”
