PLANS have been drawn up to demolish a characterful building in the town centre and replace it with apartments.

Proposals seek permission to level Arpley House on Wilson Patten Street to clear the way for the four-storey development.

If approved, the application would see the creation of 74 apartments within walking distance of the town centre.

The scheme is due to be discussed by members of the council's development management committee later this month.

The site also encompasses an existing car park.

According to the developer, the top of the door surround on Arpley House would be retained and displayed in a communal garden for residents.

It also says that the new development would make more efficient use of the footprint of the site, incorporating basement car parking spaces, a ground floor cycle store and a lobby for residents.

The communal garden would be created at the rear of the development.

Mike Gore, director at architects Chester Falconer Hall, said: “The aim is to deliver a confident, contemporary rendition of apartment living.

“The scheme looks to knit the street scene back together and provide a visual link with the existing Georgian terraces along Wilson Patten Street.

“The proposed material palette will ensure the building sits well within its context.”

Jeremy Clarke, of Park Equity Invests Limited, added: “This opportunity will provide a coherent development, making full use of the site resulting in energy efficient residential accommodation.”
