FIRE crews have tackled a fire that was deliberately started in the basement of an old rectory building in Grappenhall.

Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service received reports of the fire just after 7.20pm on Good Friday, April 15.

Two appliances from Lymm and Stockton Heath were dispatched to the scene and on arrival, smoke could be seen billowing from the building.

It is believed the fire was started deliberately in the basement of the building and Cheshire Police are investigating the incident.

A spokesman for Cheshire Fire and Rescue said: "Firefighters were called to reports of a fire in a derelict building on Church Lane, Warrington.

"On arrival, smoke was issuing from the building and two firefighters wearing breathing apparatus used one hose reel, alongside a covering jet, to begin tackling the fire.

"Following a search of the building, the fire was found to have been in the basement.

"Once extinguished, firefighters checked the property for hotspots using a thermal imaging camera prior to leaving the scene.

"Cheshire Police also attended this incident."
