Today is World Down Syndrome Day. A global awareness day where people across the world get involved by supporting and campaigning.

The day was selected to be on 21st March to signify the uniqueness of triplication of the 21st chromosome that causes Down syndrome.

Whether it’s selling their gingerbread sock biscuits, rising to their Tri21 challenge, or wearing different, brightly coloured socks (and then filling them with spare pennies), Down Syndrome Cheshire have a number of ways for people to get involved with the day.

Emma Grimster, from Down syndrome Cheshire, said: “World Down Syndrome Day gives us a chance to highlight to the community the diverse skills and talents of our members.

Warrington Guardian:

“It is about finding engaging fun ways to fundraise in order to support the work we do.”

They have also commissioned their own song to celebrate the awareness day. ‘So Can I’ has been composed by John Barber of The Love Music Trust.

Emma added: “We’ve had great support from a list of schools in the Warrington area selling our gingerbread biscuits.”

Sandy Lane Nursery and Forest School in Orford, Broomfields Junior School in Appleton, The Stables Nursery School and St Thomas CE Primary School in Stockton Heath are just a few from the long list.

Woolston 6th Form SEN College have also got involved by inviting students to come into college in odd socks today.

Emma said: “It is also reaching out to any families who may have a member with Down Syndrome to let them know about the support and services they can receive from us.”
